Emotenashi Interview

I had an interview by Emotenashi, Kaonoe-san.

This is the article he wrote:)
“Wakalture Experience offering real Japanese culture”

He brought my portrait which he drew!!

See the details!! My outfit, name tag, necklace which I always wear, Tsumami-zaiku corsage and even the mole on my neck!!
He said he wasn’t a pro illustrator but I know he can be if he wants!!haha

About him, Kaonoe-san. He draws portraits of tourists to Japan on Instagram.
His Instagram: @kaonoe_japan_illust
He picks photos at random which tourists posted on Instagram. Then draws their portrait, send it to them as a surprise gift!!
Isn’t it amazing?!

He says he will keep continuing this project until Tokyo Olympics in 2020. Then have an exhibition “welcome” to many tourists who visit Japan in 2020.
He called this project “EMOTENASHI”
Emotenashi is a coined word with “E” and “Omotenashi”.
“E” means picture or illustration.
“Omotenashi” is hard to define in English because to understand it’s to experience Japan in-person. It’s hospitality but a Japanese way of hosting and serving guests.

This is the original article in Japanese.
“日本の本物の文化を体験してもらいたい”

Finally a friend who made this website came to Wakalture!

Keith is my friend from England who used to live in Japan.
I met him 6 years ago after I came back from my working holiday in Australia. We just kept in touch then after I came back from Canada (also working holiday), I decided to start Wakalture for visitors to Japan. Since I know he is a designer, I asked hime to create Wakalture’s logo, flyer and this website.
As you see, he created this cool website!!
This is his website; https://www.gd86.co.uk

That was 2016. He’s finally come to Wakalture after 2,5 years just before he left Japan!!

He chose 虎 means tiger to write.
Even though he knew the kanji, it was still challenging for him!

He left a great review on TripAdvisor:)

As I know quite a bit of kanji already, I still found it interesting to try my hand at shodō under the eye of Wakana Sensei. She taught me some meanings of kanji that I had no idea about, as well as other parts of the Japanese culture. It was really interesting, as you get to learn about kanji, and also understand more about how difficult it can be.

Guests from Make-A-Wish

I had an offer from Make-A-Wish through Airbnb experience.
Yohan and his family visited me for Udon making and Calligraphy class:)
They came from Quebec, Canada. I’ve visited there when I lived in Toronto few years ago. So we enjoyed talking about their city too!!

They enjoyed making Udon noodle from scratch!!

Then they tried Japanese calligraphy.
It’s not easy to write with brush but they enjoyed the difficulty too;)

Their works:)
From the left hourse, car, family.
They chose the words which they like.

They also liked my handmade accessories (Origami earrings, Tsumami-zaiku hairpin etc…) and brought some back home:)

I hope I could help Yohan’s travel more memorable:)

Osechi, a traditional Japanese meal for New year

Osechi is a traditional Japanese food for New year.
They come in special boxes called Jubako. Each dishes in Jubako have special meaning for welcoming New year.

Most of shops closed around New year long time ago like before having fridge. So that people had to make something that they could keep long time while all shops closed. So it used more sugar, salt or vinegar.
People used to cook but it’s a lot of work. So now most of family buy it;) My mum and grandma still cook some of them though:)
The top one is at my home.

And these below are my husband’s place Osechi!!
